Dr. Battey returns from medical mission to Haiti

Drs-Florestal-and-Battey-289x300Dr. Richard Battey,  served a medical mission to Haiti in January. Dr. Battey spent a week in Bonne Fin, Haiti, teaching and performing surgeries and screening for cervical cancer. Dr. Battey was contacted by a fellow Grants Pass physician who had been to Haiti and knew of the need for a gynecologist to teach more modern surgery techniques to the gynecologist at Lumiere Hospital. Lumiere Hospital is managed by Apolstolic Christian World Relief.

"We spent a few days in the communities surrounding Bonne Fin meeting women and doing visual cervical cancer screenings." said Dr. Battey.  "Each woman paid $1 to have a visit with us which is a lot of money for them.  An actual Pap test is quite expensive and just not an option for the vast majority of women.  The resources and methods we take for granted here in the U.S. are really non-existent in Haiti."

Dr. Battey also performed seven surgeries alongside Dr. Mario Florestal, teaching him less invasive techniques for gynecologic surgeries, which will result in less recovery time for patients. He and Dr. Florestal communicated via email prior to the visit and continue to stay in touch. "Dr. Florestal is able to ask me questions about medical issues his patients are experiencing and I can give him advice when he needs it." says Dr. Battey.

He also took four crates of medical supplies with him, including gloves, swabs, speculums and suture material donated by Three Rivers Medical Center and Women's Health Center.

Women’s Health Center awarded AIUM Accreditation

The Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine has announced that Women’s Health Center of Southern Oregon has been awarded ultrasound practice accreditation in the areas of Obstetrics and Gynecologic Ultrasound. Women’s Health Center is only one of two practices in all of southern Oregon with this prestigious accreditation.

Women’s Health Center achieved this recognition by meeting rigorous voluntary guidelines set by the diagnostic ultrasound profession. All facets of the practice were assessed, including the training and qualifications of physicians and sonographers; ultrasound equipment maintenance; documentation; storage and record-keeping practices; policies and procedures to protect patients and staff; quality assurance methods; and the thoroughness, technical quality and interpretation of the sonograms the practice performs.

The Center was last accredited in 2010, effective for three years.

“One of our core values is to provide excellent, compassionate care that fulfills the needs of the women in our community”, says Lisa Solomon, Executive Director of Women’s Health Center of Southern Oregon. “We often voluntarily seek to meet more stringent standards, such as this AIUM accreditation, in order to ensure we are offering our patients the absolute best care available to them.”

The AIUM is a medical association of more than 9900 physicians, sonographers and scientists dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine through professional and public education, research and accreditation. For more information, visit www.aium.org
