Medications that can be taken during pregnancy

We know that sometimes medication is needed when you are pregnant, so we have provided a list of over-the-counter medications that are considered to be safe for a woman to take during her pregnancy. If your symptoms are not relieved after taking a medication from this list, please call our office for further assistance.

 

Allergies

  • Claritin
  • Zyrtec
  • Benadryl
  • Actifed
  • Sudafed (requires a prescription)
  • Sudafed PE (for use in the 2nd & 3rd trimesters only)
  • Chlortrimeton

 

Artificial Sweeteners

  • Nutrasweet
  • Splenda
    • Do Not Use: Sweet & Low or Saccharine

 

Constipation

  • Fibercon
  • Metamucil
  • Citrucel
  • Milk of Magnesia
  • Colace

 

Coughs & Colds

  • Robitussin PE or Robitussin DM
  • Tylenol Sinus
  • Vicks Vapo-Rub
  • Cough Drops
    • Do Not Use: Nyquil or Dayquil

 

Heartburn / Indigestion

  • Mylanta
  • TUMS
  • Pepcid
  • Zantac
  • Maalox
  • Gaviscon
  • Gas-X
    • Do Not Use: Pepto Bismol

 


Hemorrhoids

  • Preparation H
  • Anusol HC
  • Tucks

 

Nasal congestion

  • Robitussin CF
  • Actifed
  • Sudafed
  • Saline Nasal Spray

 

Pain, Fever, or Headache

  • Tylenol—regular or extra strength
  • Do Not Use: Aspirin, Advil, Ibuprofen, Motrin or Aleve

 

Rash / Itching

  • Calamine lotion
  • Benadryl
  • Benadryl Lotion
  • Hydrocortisone cream 1%

 

Sleep Aid

  • Benadryl
  • Tylenol PM
  • Unisom

 

Sore Throat

  • Cepacol
  • Chloraseptic Spray
  • Throat lozenges or Cough drops

 

Yeast Infection

  • Monistat 7
  • Gyne-Lotrimin

 

Skin Care

  • Pro-Active
  • Stridex pads
  • Clearasil
  • Antibacterial Soap
  • Facials

 

Vomiting:

  • Vitamin B6 (10-25mg) and Unisom (over-the-counter sleep aid)
    • Take one tablet of B6 and ½ tablet of Unisom in the morning and afternoon
    • Take one tablet of B6 and one tablet of Unisom at bedtime
