April is National Humor Month!

April is National Humor Month!

Who doesn’t like to laugh? Laughter and joy – the benchmarks of humor – lead to improved well-being, boosted morale, increased communication skills and an enriched quality of life. It’s no coincidence that this month begins with April Fool’s Day, a day which has sanctioned fun and amusement for hundreds of years!

Laughter is a great thing – that’s why we hear the expression “Laughter is the best medicine”.   The curative power of laughter and its ability to relieve stress and burnout may be one of the most economical and great medical discoveries of our time!  There is strong evidence to show that laughter can actually improve health.  In addition to alleviating stress, it can reduce depression, enhance mood, and even has been shown to increase the activity of immune cells.  Laughing even exercises some of your muscles.

Here’s a few tips to put more laughter in your life:

  1. Regain your smile. A smile and a laugh aren’t the same, but they live in the same neighborhood.
  2. Figure out what makes you laugh and do it more. Whether it’s watching funny shows or renting your favorite silly movie, do it!
  3. Stop taking yourself so seriously and laugh at yourself!
  4. At dinner or family time, have family members share funny stories or even embarrassing moments of the day. Laugh and support each other.
  5. Anytime something is annoying or frustrating, turn it on its head and find the humor. Laugh at life’s little annoyances.
