APRIL IS STI AWARENESS MONTH

APRIL IS STI AWARENESS MONTH

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) and Chlamydia are the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affecting men and women across the country. But did you know that, according to the Centers for Disease Control, Oregon is one of several states in the U.S. experiencing a Syphilis epidemic? If you are sexually active or are thinking of becoming sexually active, TALK, TEST, TREAT.

TALK openly and honestly with your partner(s) and your healthcare provider about sexual health and STIs. Talk to your partner BEFORE you have sex. Discuss when you were last tested and if needed, go get tested together. Always use condoms in addition to your other birth control method and agree to only have sex with each other. TALK to your healthcare provider about what STI tests you should be getting and how often. Not all check-up visits include STI testing so unless you discuss this, you shouldn't assume it is being done.

TEST for STIs. It's the ONLY way to know for sure if you have one since many STIs, including Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and HPV, don't show many outward symptoms.

TREAT any known STIs right away. Work closely with your healthcare provider to ensure the correct treatment is completed. Some STIs can be easily cured, while others stay with you for life. Always notify your sexual partner if you have a known STI and take steps to reduce the risk of transmission.

For more information about specific STIs or to schedule testing, please contact Women's Health Center. You can also visit the CDC's website at
