Don’t Make a Resolution – Make an Evolution!
It's that time of year when everyone makes a resolution to be healthier, eat better and exercise. But instead of a resolution, commit to an evolution. Don't try to make huge, sweeping changes all at once; set small attainable goals as you evolve and change your lifestyle.
Focus your goals. Don't start off thinking "I need to lose 50 lbs", but consider "I want to fit into that pair of pants I love again." Or "I want to be able to walk to the mailbox without being winded".
Want to start exercising? Walk for 10 - 15 minutes and work your way up to 30 minutes or more. Find a buddy to walk at lunch with you or maybe help your paunchy pooch lose a pound or two. Thinking of joining a gym? Start with one day a week, then two and so on. The more exercise becomes part of your daily routine, the easier it will be to get it done!
Have a sweet tooth? Cut out dessert a couple times a week and work your way up to more. Change a sugary breakfast cereal to something more wholesome and add raisins or berries for sweetness. If you're a soda fiend, replace one soda a day with a flavored bubbly water. Pretty soon, you won't be drinking soda at all. Choosing a balanced diet of healthy whole foods while still enjoying some of your favorites will make you more likely to stick with your new lifestyle long-term. Remember it's an evolution!
But always remember that perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie or skipped your walk for a couple days because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; recover and get back on track.
Have a Happy, Healthy New Year!
