Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating
The holidays do not have to be all about food and gaining weight. You and your family can indulge and enjoy favorite treats without going crazy. Here's a few tips to help:
*Be realistic. Work at maintaining your current weight rather than try to lose weight.
*Plan time for exercise. Exercising can reduce stress and prevent weight gain. Plus it's fun to get all bundled up and go for a walk!
*Don't skip meals. You’ll overindulge if you don’t eat all day before going to a party.
*Survey party buffets before filling your plate. Choose one or two of your favorite foods, have a reasonable serving and fill the rest of your plate with healthy choices. Better yet, offer to bring a wonderful healthy dish.
*Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed. Savor your favorite holiday treats, don’t inhale them!
*Be careful with beverages. Alcohol can induce overeating and soda and egg nog are packed with calories. Have one favorite drink and switch to sparkling water.
*If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. Don’t beat yourself up.
*The holidays are about more than food. Focus on holiday activities that don’t involve eating.
