Medications That Can Be Taken During Pregnancy

We know that sometimes medication is needed when you are pregnant, so we have provided a list of over-the-counter medications that are safe for a woman to take during her pregnancy. If your symptoms are not relieved after taking a medication from this list, please call our office for further assistance.

Allergies

  • Claritin / Alavert (loratadine)
  • Zyrtec (cetirizine)
  • Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
  • Actifed (triprolidine)
  • Sudafed (pseudoephedrine -Rx only)
  • Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine maleate)
  • Flonase (fluticasone)
  • Nasacort (triamcinolone)

Artificial Sweeteners

  • Nutrasweet
  • Splenda
  • Do Not Use: Sweet & Low or Saccharine

Constipation

  • Colace
  • Fibercon
  • Metamucil
  • Citrucel
  • Milk of Magnesia

Coughs & Colds

  • Robitussin PE or Robitussin DM
  • Tylenol Sinus
  • Vicks Vapo-Rub
  • Cough Drops
  • Emergen-C (not more than once daily)
  • Do Not Use: Nyquil or Dayquil

Diarrhea

  • Imodium

Head Lice

  • Nix (permethrin)

Heartburn / Indigestion

  • Mylanta
  • TUMS
  • Pepcid
  • Zantac
  • Maalox
  • Gaviscon
  • Gas-X
  • Do Not Use: Pepto Bismol

Hemorrhoids

  • Preparation H
  • Anusol HC
  • Tucks

Nasal congestion

  • Robitussin CF
  • Actifed
  • Sudafed
  • Saline Nasal Spray
  • Mucinex

Pain, Fever, or Headache

  • Tylenol—regular or extra strength
  • Do Not Use: Advil, Ibuprofen, Motrin or Aleve

Poison Oak

  • Zanfel
  • Benadryl Cream or Spray

Skin Care

  • Pro-Active
  • Stridex pads
  • Clearasil
  • Antibacterial Soap
  • Facials
  • Do Not Use: Retin-A

Sleep Aid

  • Benadryl
  • Tylenol PM
  • Unisom
  • Melatonin (1mg 2-3hrs before bed)

Sore Throat

  • Cepacol
  • Chloraseptic Spray
  • Throat lozenges or Cough drops

Rash / Itching (see Allergy Section)

  • Calamine lotion
  • Benadryl
  • Benadryl Lotion
  • Hydrocortisone Cream 1%

Yeast Infection

  • Monistat 7
  • Gyne-Lotrimin

Vomiting

  • Vitamin B6 (10-25mg) and Unisom (over-the-counter sleep aid)
  • Take one tablet of B6 and ½ tablet of Unisom in the morning and afternoon
  • Take one tablet of B6 and one tablet of Unisom at bedtime
  • Preggie Pops or B-Natal Lozenges (available online or at your pharmacy counter)
  • Sea Band Acupressure Wrist Bands
