Postpartum Hair Loss

During pregnancy, your hair may have felt thicker, fuller, and healthier than usual. Then, a few months after delivery, you start noticing hair everywhere: in the shower, on your clothes, or in your brush.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Postpartum hair loss is extremely common and usually temporary. Understanding why it happens and what to expect can help you feel more confident as your body recovers after childbirth.

What Is Postpartum Hair Loss?

Postpartum hair loss is a temporary increase in hair shedding after childbirth. It’s also called postpartum telogen effluvium.

It’s a normal shift in the hair growth cycle after pregnancy. Your hair follicles are still there, and new hair will continue to grow over time. It isn’t a permanent form of hair loss.

After childbirth, you may notice:

  • More hair collecting in the shower drain
  • Extra shedding while brushing or styling
  • Thinning around the hairline
  • A ponytail that suddenly feels thinner
  • Hair that looks flatter
  • Thinning across the scalp

Why Does Postpartum Hair Loss Happen?

Hair naturally moves through cycles of growth, rest, and shedding. Every day, it’s normal to lose some hair without noticing.

During pregnancy, rising estrogen levels keep more hairs in the growth phase for longer. That’s one reason many women feel like their hair becomes thicker during pregnancy.

After delivery, hormone levels drop quickly. Many of the hairs that were kept in the growth phase move into the shedding phase at the same time. Instead of losing those hairs gradually over several months, you shed more of them at once.

It may feel like you’re losing too much hair, but your body is usually shedding the hair that was retained during pregnancy.

When Does Postpartum Hair Loss Start?

Most women notice increased shedding about two to four months after giving birth. Timing can vary.

The hair loss is often most noticeable around the three- to four-month mark before it gradually slows down.

What Does Regrowth Look Like?

As new hair grows in, you may notice short hairs along your hairline or around your temples. Some women describe these as “baby hairs” that stick up as they grow.

These short hairs are often one of the first signs that recovery is underway. Hair grows slowly, so regrowth takes time. Most women begin to see their hair return to its usual fullness within six to twelve months after delivery.

Can You Prevent Postpartum Hair Loss?

You can’t completely prevent postpartum hair loss. But there are ways to protect your hair and support healthy regrowth while your body recovers.

Some helpful tips include:

  • Avoiding tight ponytails and hairstyles that pull on the hair
  • Using a wide-toothed comb
  • Avoiding harsh chemical treatments
  • Limiting heat styling when possible

A layered haircut may also help create the appearance of more volume while your hair grows back.

Nutrition matters, too. Your body is recovering from pregnancy and, for some women, supporting breastfeeding. Eating enough calories and taking prenatal vitamins can help support recovery unless your doctor advises otherwise.

When Should I Talk to a Doctor?

Postpartum hair shedding is usually normal, but there are times when it deserves a closer look.

Consider talking with your doctor if:

  • Hair loss continues beyond the first year after delivery
  • You notice bald patches instead of overall thinning
  • The shedding seems severe or gets worse
  • You develop symptoms such as fatigue, feeling unusually cold, unexplained weight changes, or brain fog
  • You suspect low iron or another nutritional deficiency

In some cases, thyroid disorders, iron deficiency anemia, or other medical conditions can contribute to hair loss after pregnancy.

Postpartum Hair Loss Is Usually Temporary

Postpartum hair loss can be frustrating, especially when it feels like you’re losing more hair than normal. The good news is that this type of shedding is usually temporary. As your hormone levels stabilize, your hair growth cycle typically returns to normal and new growth begins to appear.
